After one has served a general four year enlistment and has been discharged, is one free of all obligations to the military or may one be recalled and required to comply?

Maybe in times of war where there is a draft. Otherwise I don't believe so.

Those who are discharged before completing 8 years of active duty or reserve duty in an active drilling status are transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) for the remainder of their military service obligations (MSO). The Individual Ready Reserve does not drill or receive pay; however, a member in IRR status can be recalled to active duty during time of war or national emergency until the 8 years have expired. Most members separating with an honorable discharge after completing a single term of service (typically 3–6 years) are transferred to the IRR for the remainder of the 8-year MSO.

Thank you for clarifying that. I am embarrassed, but the subject never came up. When I retired from the Navy with a bit over 20 years I was actually put in the Fleet Reserve until I had thirty inactive.

  • So I'm mistaken that enlistment is four years?  Does this IRR take in to account the individual having started a career or family?

I'm not sure what time period enlistment is and it may differ from one branch to another.  I think you're in the IRR irrespective of your family status.  however, that status may be taken into consideration if the need to call up reserves comes into play.  This post was edited by SpunkySenior at November 14, 2016 7:37 PM MST

Marines are for life and can be recalled. I think it's the same for all branches.

Do you really think that a 75 year old Marine is going to be recalled?
