How do people live with dogs and cats in the same house?

Dogs like chasing cats. Cats don't like dogs. So how do they do it. My friends have a cat and now a new dog. They both work and the pets stay home alone. I wonder how they survive. Maybe one in one room and the other in another room?

    My dog loves cats but hates other dogs. She's always so happy to see the cats and nuzzles them and the cats rub up against her and sometimes they cuddle together. Not all dogs are the same.

  • I had a dog and a cat at the same time and they got along well.  Not spoil of them fight with each other.

    You have to have the dog first.  Dogs will usually accept a new cat into the home.  A cat is queen bee and will often never make friends with the dog beast you allow to invade her kingdom.

    They get used to each other (just like human room mates).
    And just like human room mates, sometimes they get along and sometimes they don't.

    If they have grown up together, they usually have no problem with other dogs or cats.

    This may come as a surprise, but animals are individuals too. Some are high strung, others are laid back.

  • Works best when cat is feisty and dog knows the power of the claw.
    Once the respect thing is sorted out, it doesn't take long for friendship to develop.

    Many years ago I had a "transspecies" cat.  (He though he was a dog.)

    All of the dogs he met seemed to instinctive accept his "real" self.

    I'm serious---that was 50 years ago and I haven't come across it again.
