He's dead. Why?
He died of lung cancer. He smoked like a chimney. Probably made cigarette commercials in the 40's like everyone else with black tar lungs.
He was Incredibly Hot To The Point Of Distraction in "The Ten Commandments"

well, he's DEAD for one thing......and the anti-smoking commercial he made was still on TV after he died.......rather creepy...........I remember it well; he said, over and over "Don't smoke......DON"T SMOKE""""".......I sure hope it helped someone, but I doubt it!!
so he had at least some small influence on the smoking addiction........
