It is one of those jobs where you make the job description yourself. Some, like Elanor Roosevelt. are very active politically, others hide themselves and say nothing about anything.
Bess Truman was very quiet. Mrs Ike was too. Mrs. Nixon was somewhat in the background. Jackie took on making the White House more elegant but honestly I can't think of anything more she contributed. Mrs. Ford admitted she was an alcoholic and opened the Betty Ford Clinic in Palm Springs I believe which was an extremely brave and very useful/helpful thing to contribute. Of course Hillary was never a background wife and Michelle has been superb I think. You wanna know what I worry about? It's a small thing I guess. The vegetable garden that Michelle started so kids could see where veggies come from and eat more nutritiously. PET will probably plow it under and build a golf course. Yes I know. He probably won't do that but he is not a huge advocate of children's health either. Michelle got kids to exercise. We will not see her kind for awhile if ever again. Mrs. Roosevelt was magnificent.
