FDR signed the Social Security Act on August 14, 1935. Taxes were collected starting in January 1937. Regular monthly benefits began being paid out in January 1940.
Medicare was established by the 1965 amendments to the Social Security Program and was passed into law July 30, 1965. Lyndon Johnson was president. You could begin signing up for the program July 1, 1966.
Now Republicans want to radically change them, privatize them, reduce them...maybe get rid of them entirely step by step, piece by piece, provision by provision. They have the power to do so and the lack of caring about anyone to be ashamed about it.
