The US does not pay bribes to Terrorists. Donald J. bribed to Carrier to keep 1000 jobs in the USA. How much did you pay Donald J?

So now ALL companies will see that they can exact a bribe too because Donald J. is an easy mark. Bribe after bribe after bribe foreverafter. What is it called on the expense side of the BUDGET? "Facilitating Paper"?  It ain't Donald J.'s money. A tax cut,  a stipend, a subsidy, an "incentive". A BRIBE. Donald J. doesn't mind paying to play as long as someone else foots the bill. And he is going to Indiana to take a victory lap for bribing. He is one amazing dude ain't he?

If not a bribe, then a threat to punish Carrier with HUGE tariffs for any products they may produce in Mexico or anyplace offshore. That was what he threatened against Carrier during the campaign when they were planning on moving. Maybe some insider will leak the details of what REALLY happened. By now, the whole world knows how Trump "deals".

Trump could not legally impose such a tariff on an individual company, so that likely wasn't the incentive.

According to media reports I've read, the carrots and sticks offered were:

    A) Tax incentives and such by the state of Indiana if Carrier didn't send ALL of the Indianopolis plant jobs to Mexico.

    B) The implied threat of fewer military/government contracts for Carrier's parent company, United Technologies.

What I find fascinating about the Carrier deal is it has NOTHING to do with any version of GOP orthodoxy on economic issues. It's not "the magic of the free market." It's not even "bringing jobs back to America" by forcing companies to endure hardships if they offshore production. Instead, it's basically bribing Carrier with government money to keep the plant in Indianapolis open.

Whatever the merits of the "bribe companies to stay here" policy are, it's most certainly NOT what the GOP has been selling since...forever.

I said he 'threatened" - I did not say he could 'legally impose" a tariff. Trump is quite capable of threatening, and his bluster, as we all know by now, is very effective. His followers hear only what they want to hear and are incapable of understanding the nuances of any discussion.

Indiana is Pence's state. Trump musta been there for the credit, since the state govt. may have been working on a deal for a while.
