Did it take...Tried to edit. Editing titles doesn't work! Standing Rock Sioux protest the building of a crude oil pipeline passing near sacred land and water source in North Dakota. Protests have been going on for months---back and forth with the Army Corp of Engineers and state government officials with the Sioux. Also with the energy company---Energy Transfer Partners.
Timeline:
December, 2014: Energy Partners applies for permit for pipeline, 172 miles across four states. Of course, the biggest problem they had was crossing an international boundary. The environment argument doesn't seem to pull much weight.
January 25, 2016: Permission to build given by North Dakota Public Service Commission.
March 11, 2016: Iowa Utilities approves the pipeline.
April 11, 2016: 200 Native Americans began protests began and continue. They will continue even after this stopped progression. Change of administration will occur, which will add more strength to oil companies. However, public opinion is also a strong force. It will be interesting.
