    Hello Rosie:

    Chutzpa.

    excon

PS>  Ok, let me expand on that..  My father ALWAYS told me that I have to crawl before I walked..  That meant I could NOT start at the top, which is where I wanted to start..

But, I didn't listen..  I ALWAYS started at the top, and it took chutzpa to do it.

How did you manage that excon?  It usually takes education/experience/performance/improvement/effort/time to work your way up the ladder of success. Track records count.  Making progress year after year counts. Being a team player counts. Getting excellent recommendations counts. Unless you are a genius (and maybe you are) getting better at doing something so you are worth more to the company takes time. It  cannot be done overnight. It certainly cannot be done on day one. So unless you are teasing me (which you may well be) I seriously want to know how you did it? Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday!  :) When I was interviewed  I always had excellent recommendations and I never lied on a resume. I never oversold myself and I tried not to undersell myself though if given a choice I would have done that. I don't like to make people think I'm better than I am. I prefer to surprise them and be better than they thought I was. I don't like to blow my own horn. Once upon a time I was willing to sacrifice a great bonus because I flat refused to do that. So what did you do and how did you do it? :) This post was edited by RosieG at January 13, 2017 7:28 PM MST

Oh. Okay sweetie. I get that. You believed in yourself and you had a vision/an idea and you just kept at it until you achieved your goal! Mazeltof! You had belief in yourself and a lotta moxie. I don't have a lotta moxie. My motto is "if at first you don't succeed give up and go on to something else". I'm only being a tiny bit facetious. I have bulled my way through a couple of things in my life and eventually succeeded  but you know what? I don't remember why I refused to give up. Yes. I can very focused and very stubborn about some things. But usually they have little to do with me personally. It's usually an idea or belief or view I hold that I will not give up just because others disapprove.  Congrats for your success and stick-to-it-tiveness. I'm sure smarts had an awful lot to do with it. Thank you for the clarifying comment excon!  I appreciate. I don't agree that "any schmuck" can start his own company though. You need vision and not everyone has that.:)

Being born in a successful family.

    Knowing the right people.

Being in the "right place" at the "right time".

Being born with the right genetics to "succeed" at the skills that are currently in demand. This post was edited by Mr. Bromide at December 12, 2016 6:42 AM MST

It is not the only method.  Lying and cheating work wonders with the right crowd.

How do you define 'success'? It's not all or only money you know, despite some posts above.

Forming a thriving company? Yes, that's one definition.

Becoming an acknowledged expert in your own field, and paid very well, but still as an employee in some large organisation? Yes - that's another.

Making a pile of money by investments, share-dealings and the like? Well, some would rate that as 'success' - might not be much use to anyone else.

Having no high academic record, and working in a reasonably-paid but unglamorous trade role, but keeping self and own family in a fair standard of living? Yes, I'd say that's successful.

Being able to meet your spouse, raise a family, without too many difficulties and then not ones you can't overcome? I'd say that is no mean feat.

The "secret" of success however you define it, is not really "secret" at all, but comes down to recognising and accepting your own strengths and weaknesses, and having the tenacity to see things through to the best of your ability.

What of lying and cheating your way through? No - that's not true "success" however much you kid yourself it is. It might obtain what you want, but it's still failure.
