Can anyone give me even one reason to not choose a cast iron pan?

It's just so superior in every way.   Why buy anything else?

Nope.  Just had a friend give me two more, an oversized frying pan and a dutch oven.

  • Awesome!   Dutch oven with flat bottom or with legs?

Flat, I already have one with legs and a recessed top to hold coals to use in the firepit.

  • Nice.  That's a pretty good deal. They are expensive new.

They are expensive, but they last forever.

  • As long as you don't drop them.  It is brittle and sensitive to shock.

I know, I lucked out.  Been wanting a big fry pay, too.  I think the dutch oven lid might fit my deep fry pan I use for chicken...that would be a bonus.

Well, if you're concerned your spouse might one day swing it upside your head, perhaps you'd be better off opting for a lightweight aluminum pan....;-D...

If OP is worried about that, the frying pan isn't the thing he should get rid of or not buy....

  • IDK.   The increased velocity might make up for the decreased weight.  Depends on your gals arm strength and how fast she can swing each in a short arc.

@Glis -- In such a scenario, I think the safest option is to assume the spouse will "Hulk out" in anger and have plenty of strength...;-D...

  • I was always told I have a thick skull full of rocks anyways.  What's the worst that can happen, right?

That was always the gift my husband's Grandmother always gave at weddings. She said every wife needed one just in case she needed to straighten her husband out. She always played it as a joke but I do think she also was partially serious about it. Lol

I have a whole set of cast iron cookware and I really love it.
But it is so heavy that if I make soup or stew in the dutch oven, I can hardly lift it.
Do you season the frying pan?

  • Season all cast iron..  It's a must.
It is heavy I'll give you that.

  • It must be seasoned. I will also re-season if it seems to be losing it's oils. Don't think I've done that in quite some time (though).
