What's the difference between a philosopher and a nut?

  • A philosopher uses his nut to search for meaning.
    A nut starts with the kernel of an idea and builds a system based on logical fallacy.

    For instance, Lucretius proposed an atomic theory in which all matter was made up of tiny parts, each resembling the visible whole. Lucretius was a philosopher.

    Irish author, Flann O'Brien suggested (in "The Third Policeman") an atomic theory of bicycles, in which both bicycyle and rider were made up of Lucretius-type atoms, right down to the handlebars, bell, and the funny-looking riding shorts. O'Brien said that after a time the atoms  of bicycle and rider become so intermixed that the rider will habitually go to sleep while leaning against a wall, while the bicycle will take itself indoors to stand by the fire. O'Brien was a nut.

  • Thanks. His name wasn't really Flann O'Brien. It was somebody Nolan but that's the pen name he used for that book.
