It's dependent on the time and circumstances, your wit and ability to be quick on the uptake. You have to have a sensitivity as to what your audience will grasp. You have to have the ability to grasp what is current and spin it into something funny. You also better be good at build up if the joke has a point, but is long in the telling before you get to the punch line.
