Have any of you ever given a eulogy?

My best friends mom died this morning. I've known this lady for 43 years now, she was like a second mom to me. My friend just asked if I'd give the eulogy for her. I know I won't be able to get through it without crying my eyes out. Do you have ANY advice on how to do this?

My condolences. I'm sorry, but I don't have any advice to share any other than be yourself and show your emotions even of it makes you not go through with all of it as planned. I've always admired those who stood up and could go through with it and at the same time show their own emotions.

  • Thank you.  I've given training presentations at work conferences,  bye this is different.  I ruin on emotions and this is going to be the most difficult thing I've ever done.  My friend needs me now and that outshadows my needs.

  • Thank you. She's my best friend and she's been my partner in crime since the 70's.

  • I was told to rehearse what you'll say, a little story always helps, but you need to say it over and over to habituate yourself to the words. Of course, when you stand up in front of people, you'll probably cry. Nothing wrong with that, bite your tongue (literally) and try and move forward best you can.

    So sorry for your loss.

  • Thank you.  That's good advice.  I just want to get through it without breaking down. Don't think that's going to happen though.

I haven't, Karen.  I wish I had some wisdom to share.   I am so glad you followed your heart for your Christmas plans.  I pray for you and your friends as you honor Granny and say goodbye to her for now.

  • Thank you my friend.  She didn't wake up while I was there,  but I know I was there and so does my friend.   I really don't know how I'm going to get through it.  Bailey said she will stand beside me if I want her to.  I might take her up on that.  Cindy needs me,  that's really all that matters.

Sorry for your loss. I think that Tammy is right, practicing will help, and I think it would be unnatural not to shed some tears.

  • Thank you. If I I am going to try my best not to break down during it. My daughter said she will stand beside me during it. It is a very sad time indeed.
