Americans today seem far more apt to believe fake news/foreigners than other Americans. "We have met the enemy and they is us". Why?

Courtesy of cartoonist Walt Kelly of POGO fame many decades ago. What is it that causes us to prefer to turn against one another? Why are we so suspicious and afraid of our own citizens?  Where did that fear come from and is it here to stay forever and a day to infinity and beyond and back again through eternity or as long as we last?

  • To understand why the USA's culture is one of mistrust, suspicion, and wearyness of authority it's important to acknowledge where we come from.
    Most of us descend from immigrants trying to escape from oppressive and/ or ineffective societies/governments and economic strife.  When our ancestors came here, many of them experienced hardships and often weren't very welcoming to the newbies.
    This has a strong influence on our collective culture.
