Countries in Europe and the Americas had similar laws until relatively recently.
Today, laws against homosexuality in these latter countries have been repealed, and LGBTs there are accorded equal status in the eyes of the law.
When and how did this radical social change come about?

I get so sad when I read these numbers, when I read about another attack on people simply because of their sexuality. Even though we are equal to law we still meet homophobia and attacks. I am aware of countries I could never visit with a girlfriend/wife. I feel sorrow and sadness for my equals within the LGBT community that have to fear for their lives. It's an attack on humanity and the world should be more active helping them. I am truly sad. :-/
