I don't know. I try to find recommendations. The HVAC guy turned out to be ok (so far...). At least he actually had the part with him as opposed to the other guy that had to order a part.
The other contractors I've used before. He is a local guy that even lived in the neighborhood and is familiar with the problems that these junk houses have. I used him when he was first starting out. They were *mostly* ok then, but it was for an exterior job. They obviously don't have the skill for detail work. Or we got the bad crew. I don't know.
I'm really losing it.

What's the "V"? Maybe there was supposed to be an "I" in front of it and he really could use some help.

Glis may be right. I asked that questions years ago and was told it used to be abbreviated H/AC and it morphed into HVAC having only two syllables to pronounce. But Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning is logical as well.
Update from dictionary.com:
Acronym Definition HVAC Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning HVAC High Velocity Air Conditioning HVAC High Voltage Alternating Current HVAC High Volume Air Conditioning HVAC Hunter Valley Aboriginal Corporation (Muswellbrook, Australia) HVAC High Vacuum

Yeah, sometimes the Ventilation is referred to as Vacuum instead. Ventilation is based on creating a vacuum effect either by creating positive and/or negative indoor air pressure. Also central vacuums you see inside big buildings. You know when the custodians just have to hook up hoses to a fitting in the wall, are usually installed by the HVAC crew but aren't very common these days.
