Although I've never been to a proctologist, I'd think the dentist would be worse, for me, depending, though, if the reason I saw a proctologist were serious or not.
I've never been a person who hates going to the dentist. I don't love it, but I don't dread and fear it the way many people do. Proctologist, though, no thanks, don't want anyone poking and prodding my "sun don't shine" zone.
A few years ago I developed prostate cancer and was sent to a professor of urology for a biopsy. He was a very down-to-earth guy and when he had finished the preliminary questions he said, "Drop your pants and assume the position." Then he went looking for the prostate.
After that experience I doubt that a proctologist would hold any fears for me. Dentists, on the other hand...

I think that the level of intimacy, embarrassment, and trust needed to negotiate a visit to the dentist, sort of climbs exponentially to me when thinking about a doctor Venturing where no man has gone before. The second one.
