How does music relate to sport?

After the L.A. Olympics an interviewer asked 400m silver medallist, Raelene Boyle, what had been going through her mind during the race. She said she'd been mentally singing The Eye of the Tiger. The interviewer said, "There's been a lot of that going on." What songs would inspire you?

  • To be really good at a sport, it usually takes concentration and relaxation.
If you've trained with music, to get to that state of calm and concentration,
then I suppose it could work for you.   Personally, I think it's a bad idea.

  • It probably depends on the sport. At elite levels pure concentration would be better and yet some elite athletes have said they listen to music as they train.

  • We both agree that music during training could work, but that music probably isn't going to be there during the event (whatever that may be).
So my concern is, in your question, it says, "during the race." ... and if that works for her ... I'm happy for her.  Again, I say, I wouldn't do it. :)

  • Understood. And yet, from the interviewer's comment, it seems many people were mentally hanging on to the same song. Whatever gets them through the pain, I guess.
