Can someone explain this to me? How does putting a 20% tariff on Mexican imports hurt Mexico? Don't Americans pay it?

So imports coming in from Mexico to America for sale are charged an extra 20%. How does this make Mexico pay for the wall when it is the Americans who purchase the goods who are paying the 20%? That means We  the people pay for the wall upfront and then pay extra for what we buy from Mexico?  This is a good thing because?

  • Yes they do... But with a price rise of 20% less of them are sold, less are then made and people lose their jobs
