Why are cats so often chosen as a witch's "familiar"?

Do they carry the imprint of their father, Satan, in those accusing, judgemental eyes?

  • Nah, it's just that cats are cool, inscrutable, wise, smart, gorgeous oh and did I say cool?  If I didn't know better me thinks you aren't that fond of felines :P

  • It's not that I don't like them, Daydream, it's just that my dog is sitting on the couch next to me and if she sees me saying nice things about cats she's likely to write me off as an appeaser. (I only get away with telling you this because she's snoring just now.)

I found a paw print in one of my chess books a few years ago. I don't know if she walked across it or has been studying the game. I wasn't game to challenge her because I've never been beaten by a dog and don't want to spoil my record.

  • Ahhh I seeeee you have been converted to the *dog* side.. well see I always thought that people who prefer dogs have just not yet met the right cat :P

But I forgive you your deviance cos I used to be a dog person too, as a kid I preferred dogs to cats.. lol but then I realised how wrong I had been :P

  • True indeed, Alf. In fact, I thought the picture you posted there was inspired and I'll add it here for the benefit of new readers.

  • Sounds wise. It sounds as though he's like the guy in Johnny Cash's song, "A Boy Named Sue". Boy, could he ever fight!

  • Found this one a site and it kinda makes sense. :)

    CAT FAMILIAR

The cat familiar is a companion to a witch, they are drawn together as if by a magnet, each intuitively knowing they are meant to be together, they are similar in character as both are astute, wise, and independent. When the witch and cat are at work together the magic pull is extremely powerful and they know instinctively that it is meant to be, a bonding takes place and the two form a lifelong alliance. Cats have a mysterious air about them and have for centuries been linked to all matters occult.

  • That is NOT an independent, unbiased comment. It was clearly written by a cat-loving, fiend-conjuring crone.

Because cats are very intuitive and use their energetic radar more than most animals.

  • I once saw a kitten scared witless. It did the whole screeching, hair-sticking-out thing, and bolted upstairs, just as a woman was about to enter the room. Maybe it just knew her footsteps. Maybe she was Mephistopheles in human form.

WOW.  It sounds amazing, but we will never know will we?

  • Knowing that woman I'd say it just confirms that the kitten was an exceptional judge of character. Nasty piece of work. (The woman, not the cat.)

  • Don't tell my friends I said this, but so do I. I'll never own one, of course. My dog would never forgive me.
