A true gargoyle is a rain spout that is both functional and decorative. Usually an ugly troll looking thing with wings that was said to protect the building it was upon from evil spirits. They did protect from water damage.
Now they are the troll looking creature but are not normally rainspouts just decorations.
Many people still buy them to protect from evil spirits.

The Gargoyle was originally used to scare evil spirits away from the building. The water spout was added later, as the Gargoyle was in the right place for a drain.
