If you were herding sheep in warm weather how could you tell whether a wether is a ram?

Weather/whether/wether: same sound, different meanings. What other triplets can you think of that sound the same but mean quite different things?

  • So did I, but on looking it up I find it's a eunuch. It was a surprise to me, too.

  • Perfect!  Here's a conversation I remember from a B.C. comic strip.

He: How do you spell there?
    Him: Is that t-h-e-r-e, t-h-i-e-r, or t-h-e-y-'-r-e?
    He: T-h-i-e-r.
    Him: T-h-e-i-r.
    He: I thought so.

  • No ... I just rewatched "The Heat."  Part of it was portrayed in Boston and the script was my inspiration for the answer. :)

  • Good choices.

I was once asked by a wealthy guy why he found it so hard to beat me at chess. I explained that he was the boss, a money man, and all his friends were executives. When you play you squander your pawns and depend on your major pieces to win the game. I'm a working man and I look after my pawns. When all the pieces are cleared off the board my pawns then march down to your end of the board, stage a revolution, and kick you butt.

I might have been kidding but I wasn't wrong. :)

  • Unintentional segue, OzG. He was a local guy who rang the NSW Chess Association and asked where he could learn to play on the Blue Mountains. They didn't have anybody up here but gave him my phone number. Nice guy.
