What a strange question, Didge! Who thinks about being attacked by birds?

I suppose an ostrich would be one that I would treat with caution. I've heard they can kill with their kicks!

  • That's the sort of thing I was thinking of but I'd rather an ostrich than a cassowary. Bad-tempered, dangerous beasties.

Why the question? I selected one word -- birds -- and then thunk up 5 questions to ask about it. This was one of them.

I've seen those at zoos, beautiful birds!

I've just read up on them and it says that they are shy, but will attack if provoked. Seems reasonable to me, I know quite a few humans like that! :)

  • Oh, yeah. It's the quiet ones who are underestimated. I try not to stir them to anger.  Humans, I mean, not cassowaries. :)

Awww! Poor goats! I know it's the circle of life, but very difficult to watch!

  • I understand, but eagles aren't the only ones who eat goats.
Held annually in Richards Park in Brady, Texas ... the

World Championship BBQ Goat Cook-Off (no eagles)

  • Yes ... difficult to watch.  At least eagles pick on wild goats, that have some survival instincts.
(I know about this because I have a very, good friend that lives in Brady)

Yes. And eagles are carnivorous by design; humans are not.

  • Thanks for posting those. The first one, particularly, was very interesting, though I didn't share the presenters laughter at the kids fear. He thought it was hilarious -- I didn't.  But I enjoyed them.

  • The cassowary was my #1 pick (and I mentioned it in one of the responses above). Appreciate you posting the video.

When I was a kid we lived in northern Queensland for a while & one killed our American Staffy cross.. it was a large & power animal that was capable of bringing down a wild boar.. but the poor dog didn't stand a chance against the cassowary.

  • They're deadly. I was up at the Daintree about 1990, heard lots of stories about them there. Are you still in Bananaland?

  • That's gotta be Hobart. Haven't been there since 2000. Lovely part of the world. (My father in law was born there in 1908.) Bit of a contrast to Cairns.

  • I've heard turkeys would do that. He's obviously been there before because he came well prepared with that long stick.

I was curious about your user name and checked your profile info. I'm none the wiser but had a good laugh at the "fun at parties". What does HVVENEZIA mean?
