Inappropriate clothing for interviews

Does anyone else find it absurd people show up for job interviews in blue jeans and t-shirts? I have always worn a suit and tie, or a dress shirt, slacks, and tie. If I was an interviewer someone who came in jeans wouldn't give me a great first impression.

  • Blue jeans and a t-shirt? That's nothing. I've seen people show up in flannel PJs... I usually show up in business casual as well.

  • I guess I'm "old fashioned". At the interview for the job I had before this one I was the only guy out 10 that day who wore a suit/dressed formal. I was told when I was hired my choice of attire was a huge reason why.

  • Surprisingly, I've been beaten out of a customer service position before by a guy with ripped up shorts with string hanging off and a lightly stained white t-shirt. I came in wearing black slacks, white button up shirt, and a blue tie. I still can't fathom that.

  • Hmmmmm depends what you're interviewing for :) I conduct and give allot of preliminary interviews for various companies. If someone is applying for a "labour job" is perfectly acceptable to show up in jeans and work boots.... If I'm recruiting for an executive position .... Not so much. Dress for the job you want.

  • Yes. One should still dress up  bit.  Work clothes are appropriate for on the job.

  • For the interview I sure will wear my suit or dress shirt, slacks, and tie. I was raised to dress up like you own the place you're interviewing at.

  • It's all good Baba. I can take ribbing and teasing. I have a sense of humor and it's virtually impossible to offend me.

  • @Jeremey ..... I think I know who you are ....so is why I'm commenting on this ..... Yes should dress a bit above what you would wear to work  for job you are applying for ...Clean and appropriate ..... But if I am giving interview for labourer or someone in "corrections"  I want them  to have proper attire can " ask" walk through place applying for...... Should always ask questions about place appplying and ask for tour of .... And be dressed acordingly.

  • When I was working at Subway as assistant manager, a guy rolled in on roller blades, gym shorts, no shirt.  Pulls of his head phones and asks, "Hey, ya hirin'?" We were, but not him.

Currently I work in food service in a hospital and I'm shocked by how people dress for interviews.  Jeans, untuck shirts, T- shirts.

  • In an outfit like that they'd assume you wanted to make love, not profits.

Depends on the job. If a girl was applying for a stripper position, an outfit that would look good in church may not get her the job. If someone is applying for a job in a Mcdonalds dish room, dressing in a tailor-made suit with a top hat may be a little too far.
