Ring kissing. Either you kiss the Pope's ring or the ring the Mafia Don is wearing. Ever kiss a ring on someone's hand? Whose and why?

American Pols are kissing the American Don's ring. It is embarrassing to watch and should be humiliating for the ring kissers.  That they should have fallen so low as that is shocking.

  • I can't answer your question but it reminded me of a clever quote from a book I read back in the sixties called Three Cheers for the Paraclete. Tom Keneally, who wrote it, is now Australia's best known author but at that time was still a Catholic priest. His character was also a priest (likely modelled on himself) and he was having trouble with his bishop. Keneally quipped that "it wasn't his episcopal ring that he wanted kissed."

Is it his ring they are kissing?  Are you sure?
It seems to me their lips are planted firmly on his lower posterior region.

No, I've never kissed anyone's hands.  It's too subservient an action for my taste.

  • Harry, I worked for a couple of Japanese companies for about 12 years, and at one of them, whenever they were introducing a trainee around to the local staff they always started with me. And we always had the same pantomime.

The new guy would shake hands and begin to bow. Then he'd remember, "Australians don't bow", and he'd start to straighten. That's when I'd start to bow and I'd start to come up again. Nice people, funny, good sense of humour -- but those trainees provided lots of entertainment.
