Are you a Reality-Based Thinker?

Reality-Based Thinking (RBT) is centered on what philosophers call epistemic rationalityEpistemic rationality is what philosophers and cognitive scientists call thinking that deliberately seeks to jibe with reality. Because this term is uncommon and somewhat intimidating to people who don't know what epistemic means, Jack Pelham decided to re-brand epistemic rationality as Reality-Based Thinking, the idea being that people would get the general idea quickly, without the need for as much explanation. It employs a good-sense approach that works hard to get things right, so as to avoid the common pitfalls in thinking.  Fortunately for us all, it’s not particularly complicated. Also, it’s not necessary to have a high IQ to be good at RBT.

Am I a Reality based thinker?
I would say yes, because i realize that
Reality exists when there is no Ego.
This is the foundation of truth.
    But we must understand
reality is not reached through thought.
    Cheers

It's very difficult for some Baba, but as you say, you've got to check that ego or it probably can't be done.

Beans, That is why meditation is so powerful,
and why I have dedicated my life
    to sharing this information.

and YES You are 100% right
the world is very strong in it's holding on to
    everyones desires and keeping one
    trapped within thought and Ego.
It would appear as impossible and that
    there is nothing else.
BUT once we step onto the Spiritual path
and open the door through meditation
and have a direct experience of what is within,
    it becomes much easier.
WE just need to shift our focus
    to our inner light
    instead of our pleasures
of the ego and the illusionary world,
and our attachments to the illusion
will fall away, and we will have an
incredible direct experience of the Absolute Truth
within us wherever we go and whatever we do.

    cheers Beans

  • I agree with Baba in regards to keeping the ego or self out of it... But it's bloody hard... Especially when you are a piscean ... Fantasy tends to intrude somewhat ...

Whew!  I am mighty thankful you wrote that last sentence Beans because
I didn't understand anything else in your post. :(

It is 'WELL" defined in the URL I posted with it Harry:)      The writer paid special attention to that.  I'm detecting a pattern concerning my post with the newbies.

Sorry Beans.  I thought you'd know from enough of my previous posts that it was a joke.  I have been told I should always use lol but I find it's just no fun when I am forced to do that.

  • I'm a culinary thinker.

Lubricate the thinking pot with a glass of Australian red.
Add the known facts and knead till they blend. Add more wine.
Place opinions and prejudices in a colander and mix, allowing only the finest  into the pot. Have another glass.
Allow to sit and cogitate for several hours. Open another bottle.
Toss out the ingredients and do what you wanted to do in the first place.

  • Dear Beans/Silent Generation,

I appreciate very much a group dedicated to clear thinking...but then having said that, I myself prefer to go off into fantasy...

For example, the RBT folks wrote in your link, "The imagination works by decoupling ourselves from reality so as to envision things in new ways that may or may not be possible in reality."

By contrast, my friend Dianne wrote, "The essence of reality is founded in the imagination - that which rules the world. Without imagination, there would be no scientific inventions, no architecture, no political ideologies."
And then she followed up with Tolstoy; "There are stories, fables, allegories and legends with fabulous events that have never happened and never will happen, and yet which are true because they show where the highest truth can be found."

    * * *
So I myself, yes I want to be able to do RBT, but then spiral off into deeper higher truth in fantasy.

  • Beans/SG, I like the song lyrics very much...and I appreciate you bringing this question, giving us all the opportunity to explore all the strange things about reality, and at the same time reminding us about clear thinking...well done!
