You have just won a free vacation to any country in the world...

Would you go somewhere like your own country? Somewhere completely different? Somewhere they speak a different language?

Where ever WingedWonder lives or Wales, UK. I've been there twice and it was pretty nice. You were probably expecting a place that was more "grand", but I'm not that kind of person. This post was edited by Zack at February 21, 2017 10:14 AM MST

  • No, I wasn't. Wales would be among my choices too. I'd like to stay there long enough to learn how to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Dad could pronounce it, and could speak a little Welsh (he was born near Cardiff) but never taught us any.

  • Now that's evidence of a suspicious mind at work. Smart, perhaps, but suspicious.

  • Now THAT would be special. There's so much history there to be experienced.

  • I'd like to go there for the historical sites, especially the very old ones like Stonehenge. You must almost be able to feel the zillions of people who have lived there over the millennia.

  • True ... even New England is rich in historical monuments and tradition, in the air, that seems thick enough to cut with a knife.
There's a town, in the highlighted county (Cumberland), that bears my surname and I'd like to see it.

  • Hello, Alf. 'Tis a part of the country I know very well. My mum was born in Maryport and grew up in Penrith (but I'm not supposing either of those are your surname somehow).
When I was little my sister and I were packed off to stay with my grandmother for a month at a time, and when our parents joined us we would tour the lakes and eat picnics. Ullswater I remember best. But my god it's wet up there.
It's funny. My mum spent all of her adult life disassociating herself with her Cumbrian roots, even torturing herself to lose the accent. Very occasionally, when I give her gin, the odd word will come out in that very accent.
It's a beautiful place. I hope you see it one day. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at February 21, 2017 10:20 AM MST

  • Thanks, Lucia. I'm sure it is beautiful. Everybody has an accent, you know.  I suppose your mum just didn't want that one. Couldn't find Ullswater on the map, but I found the rest that you mentioned.

  • Truth is, Alf, she's a bit of a snob. She had to speak proper. Ironic that I was born in a part of the country that meant I started off with a London accent. She didn't like that either. )
