What was the last book you read without skipping through anything?

I don't skip through any books I read.  If I'm that bored with a book, I stop reading it and pick up another book.

  • I can't say that I skip through anything either. The last book I read was Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. I'm currently reading The Sea, The Sea by Iris Murdoch.

  • Dear Nevan,
What did you think of Midnight's Children?
I have it on my reading list...

I hardly skips because I only read books that I like. Last book I read was "You make me wanna" by Nikki Rashan! A sequel to Double Pleasure Double Pain!

    Divisadero by Michael Ondaatjee.

I rarely skip through and can't remember the last time that happened.  I will admit sometimes it takes me longer to finish one book over another because I'm not that thrilled with it but, I rarely stop reading a book after I start.  It has to be real stinkarooney for that to happen.

I give it 100 pages.  If I'm still not caught up in the story, I put it away and start another book.  So many books, so little time to read.  I don't want to waste time on something that doesn't capture my attention.

You are very right about so many books & so little time to read!

I think the reason I don't reject more books is due to the fact that I know within the first few pages if it's something I'm interested in buying or borrowing.

I can usually tell from the first few chapters whether it's a story that's going to grab me.  The reason I hold off for 100 pages is because I once was about to put down a book that was boring up to that point only to find that it picked up and turned out to be a great read.

  • I once read a novel about a CIA mind control program called MK Ultra. It was fanciful, preposterous, went way beyond the reader's need to "suspend disbelief". I persevered with it because I knew the author and he had my confidence. I got to the end without being satisfied then turned the last page.

And there if found a single paragraph that read, "So you think I was just making this up and that it couldn't really happen. Google "CIA MK Ultra".

So I did, and it was not only a reality but had been the subject of a US Senate enquiry. Sometimes you just don't know what's coming.

May I ask the name of the book and/or the author?

  • It was some years ago and, although I've tried to remember, even done a Google search. I couldn't find it. I'll have another look later -- linking MK Ultra to some of my favourite authors -- so watch this space.

Thanks, I have read her first book, but was hoping to expand upon that.  As Didge said, much of what is said on the subject seems to be too far out to be true, yet it has been admitted to (to some extent, they claim to have destroyed most of the files) by those responsible.

That's true, but since I mostly read fiction, 100 pages is about all I can take if it isn't interesting.
