Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Lotsa talk about education in the US. Public/private/voucher. What education system do you favor and why? In what country do you live?
Many of the charter schools are for-profit. Many are also failing as they do not spend money on the physical resources needed to provide a quality education. These are the voucher schools. Parochial schools and other private schools are paid for by the parents. Here in Toledo our public schools are on notice. The State keeps changing the rules about curriculum; which is very confusing to both teachers and students as they try to comply. This is a main reason that veteran teachers are retiring and parents send their kids to voucher schools that don't have to comply with the same standards. The outlying area schools have higher spending for students; therefore they have better education. There is a direct correlation between money and good education. I could go on with other factors, but I would offend a few here.
Whoa! :( Thank you for your thoughtful, thorough and really sadly disheartening reply my friend. Not your fault! You're just reporting it. Boy that makes me want to punch someone's lights out! When I was a kid there were church schools(Catholic mostly) and public schools. I guess there were private schools too for the elite/wealthy but I wasn't aware of them. We did not run in the same circles. I loved school! Grammar through high through junior college. That's as far I went and I loved every minute of it. I don't remember ever being without the necessary tools like books or desks or paper. We showed up, we were taught, we took tests, we did homework, we got grades at the end of the semester. Every year. There were no parents vs teacher battles then as there is now. Parents didn't blame teachers if their kids failed. They asked what they could do at home to help! I miss those days. :( Very helpful answer Ele for which I thank you again! Happy Sunday! :)
We teachers did tend to give much of the blame on parents. I have seen some pretty bad teachers too. In my last three years I could see myself wearing down...physically and mentally. That is the main reason I retired. I was doing the students a dis-service. I taught in low performing schools and would see students coming to school wearing rags and hungry. I used to give out granola bars and other stuff to those that asked. Again, I could write a book about what I have seen. Thank you for your response.
((hugs)) Did you know that teachers are my favorite folks in the whole entire world? The teaching profession is the one I admire the most and always will. That's why when any badmouths them I attack. Thank you for your thoughtful and really sweet/swell answer Ele. You are definitely one of the good guys who undoubtedly made a difference in some children's lives. Good job my friend! Proud of you I am!
