  • Christian God.
It's a corruption of Come By Ya.

  • I could possibly find some.      I just remember that.   I think it was first a  Gullah song if i am not mistaken.

  • If you find them please post them.  I always thought it was an African song to an African deity.

  • Well Gullahs are an old slave community that was isolated and held onto lots of African customs and such.   It's about God though,  I know that.
I'm fairly certain it became Kumbayah because of how Come By Ya sounds in their vernacular.   Gullah is a type of pigin English.

Kumbaya. ... Kum ba yah ("Come by Here") is a spiritual song first recorded in the 1920s. It became a standard campfire song in Scouting and summer camps and enjoyed broader popularity during the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s.

I don't use the Wiki sites as authority but I thought it was good enough for this.

We sang it at camp and loved it.  I sang it with my kids too and sing it with my grands.

  • We went on at least one camp out a month.    Just got sick of it I suppose.

  • That would be the Christian god: Come by here, Lord, come by here.

The story is that it was take to Africa by missionaries, was corrupted, and returned to the US as Kumbaya. Have a listen and see what you think.
