You understand you can't "speak" in ASL right?

I'm a college student majoring in communications specifically becoming a interpreter for American Sign Language, but I've had many instances where hearing individuals are shocked I can sign and proceed to "confirm" their curiosity, and shock by incorrectly asking me if I can "speak" in ASL. Oh sillies.

  •  That's like saying I speak in Morse Code. You communicate in ASL.

That's fascinating. Well, not the speaking part, but the ASL. Can I ask if ASL differs from other languages internationally, for instance French, Spain, German and Chinese? I am little aware on this subject, and apologize in advance.

It is fascinating. And even more fascinating that you don't use the same symbols across the world. Hmm.

  • Yep..  I took it in high school.   Oddly enough it's nothing like English Sign language and based off of French sign Language.  It even has its own grammar and sentence structure.

  • Hi Grin,
I 'see' your point, but not sure I do fully agree that you cannot speak in ASL...depends I suppose on how you perceive speech...

One definition is simply "the ability to articulate thoughts and feelings."

In my experience as an instructor in cytology, a few of our students were deaf and I learned ASL to facilitate communication with them...for us, ASL certainly accomplished all the purposes of speaking and very beautifully too, I loved it!
