There's a blizzard raging outside. So, I'm hunkering down. I'm thinking this would be a very good day to make some soup. Any recipe suggestions? I went shopping yesterday so I pretty much have everything on hand.
Don't know if you have a crock pot or not but you can buy the packaged mix of 15 bean soup with or without any ham. Probably one of the best soups you'll ever eat. Recipes are on the package but I included this link with a great sounding recipe. Great soup for a cold day!

I love a good bean soup. I haven't made one in a while & the recipe you posted looks great & is very easy. I have all the other ingredients, except the ham. BUT, I do have spicy chicken sausages which will give the soup a nice zip to it. I'm also thinking of adding some escarole and beer to it. If I'm lucky, it will be done in time for dinner. I'll post a picture of it for you.
In such a case Google is your pal. I too am making soup today. I cook potatoes in the stock. While they cook I sauté onions, garlic, celery and carrots. This goes in to the stock which then simmers. A also put in some tapenade, herbs provance and a quarter cup of either wine or some sort of vinegar.
If I wish to change individual servings as I have the soup I'll put in some seafood or pasta.
I have plenty of recipes Whistle. I was looking for suggestions that might be different than what I was thinking about. Yours sounds amazingly delicious.
I'll admit I never thought of using it in a soup. I've used it as an ingredient in various sauce recipes for pasta, seafood, and chicken. Thanks for the idea.

I have marrow bones but alas, no oxtails. That is one ingredient I didn't anticipate. Can I make a halfway decent version of your recipe using beef stock & additional marrow bones? What you were suggesting? I'm pretty good at adjusting recipes to match what I have on hand.
For sure. Simmer them in a crock-pot or on the stove very low with a tablespoon or two of vinegar. Also add your veggie scraps like celery leaves, tomato tops and carrot tops. A little garlic ( don't over do it), add a whole onion or two. Simmer 8-12 hours or over night.
Pull everything out and skim some of the fat with spoon
Add diced meat, mixed frozen veggies, celery, a few chopped tomatoes, chopped onion, and carrot. Add spice pouch of pepper, garlic, parsley, thyme, and rosemary( don't over do it). Cook about another 3 hours until veggies are done and tender. the green beans are the slowest to cook so I test them. While the soup is finishing boil up barely. When soup is done add barely. If you are going to save it don't add barely directly to soup. Add it to the bowls as it's being served to prevent the starch from making gravy. Oh same for potatoes, don't cook them in the broth. Chop and boil them on their own or the starch makes it gravy like and ruins the broth. I tend to go light on the salt and then add it as I am eating it. If the broth is bland or flavorless it just needs some salt. It taste like nothing without it, but becomes very rich when you add your desired amount.
Okay, initially I thought you were pulling my leg but I quickly realized you meant barley. lol. That sounds like a really great oxtail soup recipe! I used to make something like that years ago. I am going to copy this and put it in a file. Thanks Glis. Very much appreciated.
Soups from scratch are my favorite things to make. Sometimes I through a few bullion cubes in it for the salt if I have them around but I don't rely on them.
I came up with this leftover soup I make after thanksgiving where I devised a way of making little balls out of the stuffing with mashed potatoes in them that hold together in the gravy broth. Add some egg and mix and then brush them with a heavy egg white wash and bake for about 20min. That is one I am particularly proud of since I had no basis to start on it. Just came up with it.
That sounds awesome! I rarely have stuffing left over after Thanksgiving but I will have to make some extra this year. I'm copying that recipe into my file.

Joking aside, soups from scratch are my favorite things to cook as well. There just never seems to be an end to the ideas and it is the most forgiving of all the courses to cook.
Here is an easy yummy potato cheese soup. I don't measure so bear with me. 3-5 potatoes peeled and chopped 1/2 onion chopped Water 1 can of evaporated milk 1-2 C cheddar cheese Bacon bits for garnish In a pan throw potatoes and onion in and cover with about an 1/2 inch of water above the level of the potatoes and onions. Bring to a boil. Turn down heat and simmer until potatoes are cooked. Remove from heat add about 3/4 can of the evaporated milk. Stir. Use a potato masher to break up chunks of potatoes leave a few chunks of potato for texture. Stir in cheese. Add salt and pepper and garnish with Bacon. Serve with homemade bread or muffins. Enjoy.

LOL! Great minds think alike. I do have a bell on him! It looks like a mini-cowbell. He actually likes the cold. His fur is like a thick carpet. I'm the one you should feel sorry for! I have to stand out there shoveling for his majesty. Haha!
