  • They essentially describe the same behaviour and some don't even use the distinction.  For a brief period there wasn't one but has been made once again.

A psychopath lacks compassion and empathy due to a malfunction in  their brain.   They never developed the wiring and the parts of their brain that deal in these things aren't working at all or incorrectly.   They cannot be cured and it's largely due to genetics or sometimes disruption of proper brain  development of the fetus and infant.

A sociopath displays the same behaviours but it's due to social environment causing them to make a coping mechanism and supressing these systems.  Being tortured, beaten, seeing nothing but death and wickedness, etc.   They have the proper wiring and functioning brain centers but they have been conditioned to subconsciously subdue or block them.

Psychopaths are born that way but sociopaths are made that way.  A psychopath cannot be cured or taught to feel empathy, remorse, and compassion.   A sociopath theoretically can be taught to once again experience these things and cured.
