Should FBI directors have life long positions like Supreme Court Judges?

So they can't be fired for being too lenient or too aggressive and while giving a speech?

  • Remaining in any position should be merit based.

  • What predicaments and how does this follow from my response?

Trump fired Comey and any president can fire the current F.B.I director even if he is being investigated by him.

I'm not in favor of lifetime positions - not even on the Supreme Court.  I think when you know you can't be fired, you could find yourself slacking off and not doing the best job you can.

Nobody in government should have lifetime appointments.

How so?  Currently, SC justices do have lifetime positions.  As to the rest, they never have had.

I think Leslie Stahl was interviewing the Chief Justice of the Ninth Circuit who said his was a lifetime appointment.

Yes, I misspoke, Art. III federal judges are lifetime appointments.  I do not think they should be lifetime, either, but certainly not the Director of the FBI...look at the BS Hoover did. This post was edited by Bozette at May 10, 2017 9:42 PM MDT

The only reason I discovered federal judges were lifetime appointment was because of that 60 Minutes interview.  I thought only the Supreme Court of the U.S. was lifetime.

Appellate, district, and judges on the Court of International Trade are lifetime appointments.  Some others, like magistrates and bankruptcy judges, have set terms.
