So if you are traveling in a straight line and hit a black hole, what happens? Do you collide or bounce away? Or die?

    You would die before you reached it, thanks to the intense radiation from the material swirling into it, but even if you survived that you would not withstand the enormous acceleration due to the object's powerful gravity .

    Yes, these things are hard to comprehend even when knowing what they are, because their size, power and time scales are so vast!

    Thinking about it, you would not travel in a straight line towards the black hole, but spiral to with all the other matter it is attracting, like water going down a plug-hole.
