I knew someone who argued that Vatican City can't be a country because the word 'city' is in its name.

Do you have any examples of dumb being dumber than that?

Yes. I know someone who thinks a tilde is required as a part of every punctuation mark.

Well, that's an obvious sign of grave neurosis. Please advise that person to get high-quality pscychiatric therapy as soon as possible.

That would explain it. Perhaps he should limit it a bit, like I do; I only put them at the end of my posts, not as part of every punctuation mark. (Gotcha on a technicality!)

You put a punctuation mark and then a ~. I haven't seen a ~ without a punctuation mark, so there!

Au contraire, mon amie!  Sometimes I post a photo or other graphic followed by a tilde, no text or punctuation whatsoever. So there THERE! Touché

Fascinating.   It is not and never has been a country.

    It is considered a STATE.

Vatican City (Listeni/ˈvætᵻkən ˈsɪti/; Italian: Città del Vaticano [tʃitˈta ddel vatiˈkaːno]; Latin: Civitas Vaticana),[d] officially Vatican City State or the State of Vatican City (Italian: Stato della Città del Vaticano;[e] Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanae),[f] is a country located within the city of Rome. With an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of 1,000,[3]

it is the smallest state in the world by both area and population. However, formally it is not sovereign, with sovereignty being held by the Holy See, the only entity of public international law that has diplomatic relations with almost every country in the world.

It is an ecclesiastical[3] or sacerdotal-monarchical[7] state (a type of theocracy) ruled by the Bishop of Rome – the Pope. The highest state functionaries are all Catholic clergy of various national origins. Since the return of the Popes from Avignon in 1377, they have generally resided at the Apostolic Palace within what is now Vatican City, although at times residing instead in the Quirinal Palace in Rome or elsewhere.

Vatican City is distinct from the Holy See (Latin: Sancta Sedes),[g] which dates back to early Christianity and is the main episcopal see of 1.2 billion Latin and Eastern Catholic adherents around the globe. The independent city-state, on the other hand, came into existence in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Italy, which spoke of it as a new creation,[8] not as a vestige of the much larger Papal States (756–1870), which had previously encompassed much of central Italy. According to the terms of the treaty, the Holy See has "full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction" over the city-state.[9]

Within Vatican City are religious and cultural sites such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. They feature some of the world's most famous paintings and sculptures. The unique economy of Vatican City is supported financially by the sale of postage stamps and tourist mementos, fees for admission to museums, and the sale of publications. Sorry, Sharonna. As much as I like to see our friend, Randy D, proved wrong, in this case he is right. The terms 'state' and 'country' can be used interchangeably.

What a rube, lol!  You have fallen on your own petard:

"Vatican City (Listeni/ˈvætᵻkən ˈsɪti/; Italian: Città del Vaticano [tʃitˈta ddel vatiˈkaːno]; Latin: Civitas Vaticana),[d] officially Vatican City State or the State of Vatican City (Italian: Stato della Città del Vaticano;[e] Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanae),[f] is a country located within the city of Rome. With an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of 1,000,[3]."

Lol, I don't even have anything to do here; your own (plagiarized) words do it for me!  What savage glee!
