If a mimic is a good enough to satisfy as a substitute does authentic become superfluous?

  • I was thinking about this in relation to art forgery.  The was a noted forger in Germany who sold many paintings in different styles at very high prices.  These lost master pieces were hailed by experts and collectors.  when it came known they were forged they lost all value and the was great embarrassment to the experts who authenticated them.  Yet, with all this the paintings were still of the same aesthetic and technical merit.  Curious, no?
