There is a whole lot that figures into who a person really is, and what they stand for. The family of origin figures in greatly, the gene pool from which you came, the life experiences you have been thru, the people you were around all your life contribute to who we are as people, the teachers in our lives make a difference, for better or worse, the significant others play a role in forming us as people, where we live matters. All of this contributes, but we are mainly who we are because of who we are.
You are a reflection of your parents and who you associate with.
Of course not!
If I had infinite control over who I am, I'd currently be cruising the islands of Indonesia from surf break to surf break on my fancy yatch (with front and rear rice steamers), having made a fortune as a many-time All-Star power forward for the Los Angeles Lakers (by choosing to be 6'10" tall with world-class fast-twitch muscle explosive athleticism).
Yes, that's an extreme example but it illustrates the point. There are SO MANY things in our lives over which we do not have control, and many of those things greatly influence who we are. I'm not a retired NBA power forward because I am of average-ish height and average-ish explosive athletic ability. Successful NBA power forwards are many many standard deviations above average in both departments, and those are entirely wins of a genetic lottery. Who knows how many other things in our lives are lottery wins or losses.
Mahalo for your thoughtful reply OS. I didn't mention anything about wishing to be other than we are. I'm asking are we responsible for the p
erson we are today..not whom would we prefer to be? You aren't responsible for what you aren't. Only for what you are and what you do with it. Right? :)
You are responsible for your words and deeds aren't you TT? How can you blame parents or associates for what comes out of your mouth or for your actions? You are in total control of and responsible for those are you not? Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday to thee! :)
