In the Star Wars universe Lucas depicts droids serving drinks and performing menial tasks like slaves that long ago should have been automat

etd. Is there something in the culture that feels reassured seeing sentient beings down-trodden beholden to masters?

    Well, yes. Good point. 

    I also think we as a species love service and being waited on.  Those whom are forced to serve have been programmed in the most convenient package called a metal, long-lasting robot.   Not, I will hazard to guess, because mankind  cared a fig about dignity of man, or any of it; but rather, because it was the most efficient way to have constant servitude on-hand to service any whim man desired.   Robots are much less expensive, just by the fact you don't have to replace them nearly as often.  You have to feed a slave, etc.  Not so a robot.  They need maintenance like a car needs to be serviced, probably.
