A new Florida law allows people to challenge what students learn in class. People's Beliefs/Scientific Consensus. Which should RULE? Why?

Pertains specifically to Science and Evolution but it could be applied to anything.

Challenge?  How?  By asking pertinent questions about a subject and actually listening to the answers?

We have a long way to go before we evolve to that level.   We are apt to follow the Jehovah's Witness cleansing as per Putin in Russia, I'll wager.

Maybe the STUDENTS should decide what they wish to learn. Don't get me started on this subject.

I don't think that would be so good Ele. The students are brainwashed by their parents at home before they ever go to school so if what you say occurs they would never learn about science at all...just their church doctrine take on it. I have the time if you do sweetie. Lay it on me! Get started! Thank you for your reply and Happy Tuesday July 4th Holiday in the USA! :)

Students will pick the wrong thing.   Trump will know what is best for them.

I'd be curious to know who adjudicates disputes when sides disagree. This post was edited by tom jackson at July 4, 2017 4:21 AM MDT

I don't know tom. The entire idea scares the crap outta me. A few years ago I believe the state of Texas was planning to rewrite science books or history books to reflect the church view of evolution verss creationism. There would be no science at all...just church doctrine. I think they didn't get away with it but the spectre of that possibility hangs over our heads like the sword of Damocles. Thank you for your reply! :)

I posted something else on here after your reply.  It more directly addresses your question.

This book examines the issues involved in any discussion of this question.  (The following is from Amazon's website.)

In the classic The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis, the most important Christian writer of the 20th century, sets out to persuade his audience of the importance and relevance of universal values such as courage and honor in contemporary society. Both astonishing and prophetic, The Abolition of Man is one of the most debated of Lewis’s extraordinary works. National Review chose it as number seven on their "100 Best Nonfiction Books of the Twentieth Century."

I don't live in Florida, and I am not familiar with the law; but as a parent, I think I have a right to challenge what my child is being taught.  The problem is not in what they are teaching as "fact"---more importantly is the value judgment about the "facts" that are taught along with the "facts" themselves.
