There was a movie about a cop who captured criminals before they committed crimes. I wish there were a way we could do that. Do you?

I  am specifically thinking of those parents who murder their children or abuse them very badly. We could make them infertile but they could still adopt and murder/abuse so that wouldn't work. Putting them in prison for crimes yet to be committed seems horrible even if it were possible. But even more horrible is what the victims go through because of them. What to do?

    A totally hideous concept.

I mean what happens (and it WILL) when someone is captured that is innocent.  How do you defend yourself against what you might do?

It would profile everyone instantly for unfounded reasons.

Nothing is that safe that we can employ it with total confidence, least of all something like that.  God forbid.  Leave that in the movies for now and hopefully for the next century at least.

I have told this story before ------- I spotted a guy behind the fence of a gas station adjusting a ski mask late one summer night and called the cops. They came from every direction at great speed and tackled the guy. He had a gun that was found in the bushes nearby. They never charged him with attempted robbery, he was already wanted for rape, and spent the rest of his life in prison. He died a few years ago. Oh yeah, I almost forgot ------ this rapist had spent time in jail as a juvenile for murder. This post was edited by B.H.Wilson at August 24, 2017 2:28 AM MDT

Oh my gosh bh! If you told this story before I don't remember reading it.  I can't even begin to imagine whom you saved from what horrible thing he might have done. You got involved immediately. He couldn't see you right? Good job m'dear. Were you scared? Thank you for sharing that experience.  I am very impressionable and I visualized in my mind's eye "seeing" you in that circumstance and I got chills.

I had been reading the newspaper stories about an ongoing series of gas station armed robberies in my hometown.  Every night another place was robbed. In some cases, the poor clerks were too scared to report to work in fear of this bad guy. My business was located just behind a popular gas station and I was working late. It was about 11 p.m. I decided to step outside for some fresh air and noticed someone behind the fence. I slipped back inside before the guy saw me and called the cops. I assure you my voice was quivering as I told the desk cop what I saw. I then stepped back outside to see if the guy was still there. (he was)  Then the night was filled with the sound of police interceptor exhausts  coming from all directions. The guy actually ran right past me but he had cops surrounding him.

  • If anyone else out here had called for "sterilization" as regards reproduction, you'd be screaming accusations of Nazism. I've been waiting for you to put your foot in your mouth. As they say, give 'em enough rope............

Objectively speaking ... there is no way to prevent crime, if someone wants to commit one.
I mean, unless you arrest everybody and place them in solitary confinement so they can't commit crimes against other prisoners.
But then, you wouldn't have human guards either - as there is a history of guards committing crimes against prisoners.

So with that in mind ... the best plan is to teach everybody to defend themselves (and others) against crime.
