Has anyone here donated to Hurricane Harvey Relief?

The devastation is truly heartbreaking. At least 30 dead and more than 20,000 homeless in Houston after five days of record-breaking rain unleashed by Hurricane Harvey.

I definitely want to do SOMETHING, but I am not sure just what yet.  I will go to the Sai Baba Center this Sunday and see what they have in mind.

I would love to send clothes, food anything I can.  Money seems the safest.  I just feel weird about sending money unless I am positive it goes where it is supposed to go.

I just donated money through Amazon to the American Red Cross. Amazon is matching donations dollar for dollar. The New York Times link I posted has some good information about reputable organizations and avoiding scams.

The problem with the Red Cross is that they will not confirm that your donation will go specifically to Harvey relief.  I had that happen with Sandy.  I have donated to Operation Gratitude, generally an organization that supports the military by sending care packages to the troops, but is now diverting some of those items to Harvey relief organizations locally.  I have been with this organization almost from the beginning and I trust that the items they sent will actually benefit the victims.

Thanks.  Too much research before I know for sure.
Again, I am so happy you posted this, and it is definitely a good idea, I just have problems-- HUGE ones-- with non-profits, and all organizations where I don't know where the actual money goes.

I've worked for far too many of them.  And, again, this is not to denigrate anything.  I think this is sound and sane.  I am also angry that the government encourages donations so they don't have to cough up as much.    As usual, the people must help.   The government must build a wall.

Charity Navigator rates this as a five star organization.  You can look for yourself:

EDIT:  My apologies - it's rated 4 stars which is the highest rating.  This post was edited by SpunkySenior at August 30, 2017 8:03 PM MDT

That's more like something I would do because I know where it is going.  Cool.

I like your way of direct help, my2cents. Thank you for doing a kind, helpful act. (Even though I know you didn't "share this/post this" to get accolades.)

We actually considered ourselves blessed to be able to give directly, we are just in the area for business.  Normally it is not possible to do cause of being different areas of the country.
We just overheard him talking about getting a hold of FEMA with a hotel worker.
