NUCLEAR WINTER. Brought up by an Answermugger. I had heard the term but didn't know what it was. I do now. Do you?

Nuclear Winter is what is projected to occur after the detonation of multiple nuclear weapons. Smoke from fires started by nuclear weapons, especially black sooty smoke, would be heated by the sun, lofted into the upper stratosphere and spread globally lasting for years. Cool, dark, dry conditions would prevent crop growth for one season resulting in starvation for many. Additionally massive ozone depletion would allow enhanced ultraviolet radiation to get through . Dying immediately seems preferable to trying to survive a nuclear winter. I guess we won't get to choose how we die once nuclear war begins. SIGH.

Calm down. It is not an immediate concequence of any nuclear weapons being used. it will take a lot, say 'a considerable fraction' of the US's stockpile of nukes to bring on a nuclear winter. The Korean stockpile of some 10 to 20 small nukes is phiddlesticks in comparison.

But overall I agree. It would be a lot better if politics (in all nations) were goverened less by paranoiia an worst case scenarios, and more by common sense and a sincere desire to awoid a nuclear war. This post was edited by JakobA the unAmerican. at August 31, 2017 3:25 AM MDT

Among the words I chose to use, which ones gave you the mistaken impression that I was not calm when I asked the question? I'm just curious about how and why you would bring something up that is not in evidence to begin your reply. It is very patronizing. I don't appreciate it.
