I think it used to be - years ago at a "tavern" ladies were welcome. Whereas a "bar" presumed a men's bar. I mean like in the 1940s before I was born. You don't read about taverns at all any more but I have noticed in old newspapers and magazines from that period they mention them.
In England, a tavern was distinguished from a public ale house (bar) by dint of being run as a private enterprise, where drinkers were "guests" rather than members of the public.
