Ever been in a TAVERN? How does it differ from a bar?

    The name of the place on the facade. I have been to inns, pubs, taverns and bars. Here they are all the same but with different names.

    That's in the US. I can't say the same for other countries, but I would bet they have different meanings.

    I think it used to be  - years ago at a "tavern" ladies were welcome.  Whereas a "bar" presumed a men's bar. I mean like in the 1940s before I was born. You don't read about taverns at all any more but I have noticed in old newspapers and magazines from that period they mention them.

    In England, a tavern was distinguished from a public ale house (bar) by dint of being run as a private enterprise, where drinkers were "guests" rather than members of the public.
