I also thought of how Europeans took over America from the Native Americans -- seemingly as a "right." I find what I know of Native Americans' treatment by the "discoverers" of the "New World" as pretty awful.
Human slavery in America is just as bad as slavery anywhere.
And I get sick thinking of the huge crowds congregating to watch lynchings and lynchings and more lynchings of people of color in the USA.
Those all popped into my head, too.
I'd rather not rate the tragic qualifications of them all.
The systematic genocide of the Native Americans was the worst tragedy in American history. Bar none. Not only were their lands and goods stolen, and their people slaughtered; but their cultures were erased, and replaced with White Man’s demeaning propaganda and mockery.
The slave culture of the Old South was tragic in every sense as well. The treatment of blacks in the decades that followed the abolition of slavery was a continuing disgrace to humanity.
As horrible and historic as 9/11 was, it pales to the subjugation and suffering of millions over multiple centuries.
