After devastating natural tragedies (hurricanes, fires, earthquakes) how long does it take to get back to normal or is normal gone forever?

Are there still folks working on cleanup due to Katrina and Sandy? The fires in northern California burned down several thousand homes one of which was the home of Charles Schulz, Peanuts creator. His museum was evacuated and is sadly in the path of fires which are still burning. Mexico is probably still cleaning up after the earthquakes they had a few weeks ago. Can you put a time limit on something and just leave? If so why are we still in Afghanistan after 70 billion years...or so it seems? I don't get it.

Yes, they are still cleaning up after Katrina and Sandy.  The magnitude of the destruction and bureaucratic red tape make it impossible for this to be done more quickly.  I would have to say that the amount of time it will take to rebuild after the California wildfires will be lengthy.  Just imagine how long it will take to remove all the debris and clear the land in order to begin rebuilding.  Also, there is probably no way to restore all the old trees as they cannot plant them that big.  Life probably cannot return to what it was - there will be a new "normal."

It was  so shocking to me that after 3 weeks da prez said the Military, FEMA and First Responders could not remain in Puerto Rico forever. I mean what an inanely ignorant thing to say. Many folks there STILL lack water, electricity, food, medical attention.  Would that he were banished to a faraway village there and have to survive on his own alone. A taste of what they are going through. He doesn't have the right stuff to make do. He isn't a survivor. SIGH. Thank you for your thoughtful and informative reply Spunky and Happy Sunday! :)

I agree, but all of his minions are saying they will be there until they are no longer needed, so I'm going to hope they are the real truth-speakers.  Happy Sunday. :)

I guess we're gonna find out eventually. I hope we can survive until "eventually" arrives. Thank you for your reply Spunky! :)
