FALSE MEMORY. What causes us to "remember" things that never happened and forget things that did? Wishful thinking? Senility? Other?

I am for remembering things that really happened, not that never happened. Forgetting things suggest the following:  senility, overwhelming  with personal problems and  unorganized life,  among others.  Forgetting is applied for both young and old.  Imagine, putting the bag inside the refrigerator inadvertently or unconsciously. Putting a pair of sunglasses on the head then looking for that pair anywhere else, only to realize that pair of sunglasses is on the head.

It is quite possible to "implant" false memory simply by the nature of the questions that are asked. For example children that are allegedly sexually abused. There was a famous/infamous case in Los Angeles years ago where sexual abuse was charged of a Day School and ALL the teachers were charged with sexual abuse. Psychiatrists/psychologists questioned the children and it was later found out that none of it was true. But the damage was done to the school and the reputations of all the teachers was permanently damaged. Now General Kelly "remembered" in detail something that never happened. He attacked Congresswoman Wilson for things she never said. A complete tape with audio was provided covering her speech at the dedication ceremony for a new FBI building in 2015. What he said was proven untrue. I watched/heard every minute of it. I hope he apologizes as publicly as he was public in attacking her. So did he purposely lie or did he "misremember"? If he "misremembered" what was the basis/catalyst/trigger? Was he so frantic to find a way to attack her in order to discredit her that he made it all up without realizing it or did he rely on people believing him unaware that it was all documented on video/audio? It is a  puzzlement. Thank you for your reply Blessedwoman and Happy Saturday. An aside. I am a cancer survivor since 2008. I was told that one of the side effects of chemotherapy is memory loss. Well I have argued more than once with Jim or my sister about things I "remember" that never happened and things I don't remember that they say did. Not my fault if my memory is forever damaged. Maybe that's what happened with Kelly. :(. This post was edited by RosieG at October 21, 2017 3:22 AM MDT
