Why are so many folks more likely to believe/respect/pay attention to what they hear from strangers/friends rather than their families?

I'm not sure what it is but it is. If a stranger/friend says something that agrees with what a family has said all along  THEN they will accept it. Why do some turn off and tune out to what family members tell them and embrace almost without question what they hear from strangers/friends?
