Teddy Roosevelt had stationery engraved with "The White House-Washington" in 1901. Priorly it was "the Executive Mansion". Didja know?

I don't know why he chose to change it. I don't think it was an improvement. Do you?

  • Ole Col Roosevelt was following the people's lead. Nobody it seems was willing to call it the executive mansion. White House was the name that stuck and that's what ole Teddy went with.

I just think it is so pedestrian. Nothing remotely creative about it. It's bland. Vanilla ice cream bland.  Dull and boring bland. Totally superficial and meaningless bland. Just my opinion. Thank you for your reply uncle bob and Happy Thursday! :)

  • Yes Ma'am and I'm gonna look up all them words in a dictionary and get back with ya. I don't know how much your education cost you but it was worth ever penny and that's for shore. Maybe some of it I'll find in Uncle Bob's almanac of needful and worthwhile stuff to while away the hours with. I heard tell that there was three floors of that place under the ground. There's as much above ground as below.

Are you a bot/robot? I did not use a single esoteric word. I did not indulge in obfuscation or hyperbole or go off to another universe of flights of fancy/fantasy(take your pick) and indulge in the arcane. Which words caused you problems? Pedestrian? That is you walking. Unless you drive or ride a bike any time  you walk you are guilty of being a pedestrian. Which words made you verklempt?  I await your response to my reply to your reply. Notice I used no "big" words. You're welcome! :) I was an English major. I play with words all the time. I spell then as I wish and I make some up if I don't find those available useful.  FYI. I am not ANAL as some folks are about "proper grammar". If I can understand you then your grammar is fine. If I can't it AIN'T. Period.  But I digress.....

  • Good Grief I'm sorry I opened that door and went down that road. In saying farewell, I'll step away from my alter ego of Uncle Bob long enough to let you know that I, myself, have an expansive vocabulary along with a working knowledge and understanding of French and Latin. Must be something I picked up on my way to a college degree.(as well as Seminary and the state law enforcement academy) Uncle Bob is a character who is whimsical and folksy. He is styled after people I've encountered locally. I thought it was something that could be used in a humorous vein, not to challenge people's understanding or grasp of language and its usage. It's really too bad. A little imagination and creativity isn't welcome here, nor is any form of "good natured joshing" as Uncle Bob would put it. So, I'll jest kick back in the porch rocker, sip some iced tea and wait for the next neighbor to come by and sit a spell. It was fun while it lasted
