I think most human beings like "belonging" to something. They don't feel separated/apart/aloof/alone/abandoned. So what's up with Hermits?

What causes someone to withdraw from society, from engaging with other humans beings? Was it some rejection that hurt so much it damaged them forever? I think we all need periods of solitude/alone time. But  all the time? 24/7? Who would PREFER that to engaging with other people?

You are right. Humans are herd animal. Like cows and sardines and flying geese. We prefer doing things together with others. That is why youth gangs and knitting circles and clubs for stamp collectors.

I expect there are clubs for hermits and individualists too This post was edited by JakobA the unAmerican. at November 8, 2017 3:27 AM MST
